Purple is indeed the color for January on the Kenai (refer to post this time last year). Nothing was working today, even though I was hoping that temps around 47(above 0) would get the fish moving. In an unprecedented move, I drifted a purple, cone headed, articulating leech under an indicator, and I’m glad I did. I would have never felt the light tug as the indicator slowly dipped beneath the surface. He was sluggish to start, and just heavy after he made a run that nearly put me into my backing. I was literally shaking and panting nervously as I brought him to hand. He measured just a hair over 28″, and probably weighed at least 9 or 10 pounds. I didn’t get a long look at him because I tried to put him back as quickly as I could, but what a MONSTER! Even the 8 weight felt small with this behemoth on. It is the biggest rainbow I have ever landed (for that matter, I don’t think I’ve even witnessed one this big), and I couldn’t think of a better way to start the year.
Hey Brent-
You still must consider a POW excursion.
Nice fish.
